| POPOV Nikolai «Transcriptions» (Sonates of Schubert, Frank, Ptokofiev) |
AQVR 328-2 Nikolai Popov - flute Natalia Frolova - piano | Transcription is perhaps one of the most constantly relevant musical phenomena. Musicians who play only one instrument may complain about their limited repertoire, and will try to develop new works from pieces written for different instruments. For example, pianists often endeavor to imitate the tones of the organ or the violin. To better understand the scope of transcription, the majority of musical compositions we hear played are transcribed works. For example, nearly all of the keyboard music by Bach is played today on piano, which the composer would have never anticipated in his time. Composers from different epochs, such as Liszt and Rachmaninoff or Godovski and Pletnev have created works that demonstrate the virtuous possibilities of brilliant transcription. In a word, transcription vividly connects epochs, musical instruments, composers’ styles and famous names. The flute, one of the oldest musical instruments in the world, exists to this day without substantial change from its original form. Several historians assert that the modem flute as we know it existed in China nearly 3,000years ago. Moreover, the flute is a recognizable musical symbol on pair with the harp or the trumpet. The flute is played on its own, in the make-up of symphonic and chamber orchestras, and in varied combinations with different instruments. Nikolai Popov presents for us on this disc a few works from the history of flute and string “love affair" connected with the phenomenon of transcription.
